holidays are days
that induce a daze for days
and thoughts of daisies
Don’t worry, I have no idea what it means either. That doesn’t mean there’s no meaning there, though. One wonders if it’s possible to put absolutely no meaning into something. If you take the Dada-to-Shakespeare random word approach (by cutting up the words of a Shakespeare sonnet and drawing them from a hat), then the meaning is that it’s random, surely? (Although I think a Dadaist would disagree with that part.) If you purposely set about trying to imbue no meaning whatsoever in something, then that lack of intended meaning is surely meaning in itself as well? This leaves one more method, namely, actively trying to put meaning into a work – perhaps that’s the only way to ensure that the meaning isn’t there? After all, if you want to send a message, it’s much better to use a telegram, yes?
