Haiku #6

holidays are days
that induce a daze for days
and thoughts of daisies

Don’t worry, I have no idea what it means either.  That doesn’t mean there’s no meaning there, though.  One wonders if it’s possible to put absolutely no meaning into something.  If you take the Dada-to-Shakespeare random word approach (by cutting up the words of a Shakespeare sonnet and drawing them from a hat), then the meaning is that it’s random, surely?  (Although I think a Dadaist would disagree with that part.)  If you purposely set about trying to imbue no meaning whatsoever in something, then that lack of intended meaning is surely meaning in itself as well?  This leaves one more method, namely, actively trying to put meaning into a work – perhaps that’s the only way to ensure that the meaning isn’t there?  After all, if you want to send a message, it’s much better to use a telegram, yes?

Haiku #5

a, b, c, d, e
these are the first five letters
of the alphabet

It’s a haiku about life, birth, beginnings.

v, w, x, y, z
these are the last five letters
of the alphabet

It’s a haiku about death, endings, finality.

k, l, blank, n, o
these are the centre letters
and mid-life crisis

It’s a haiku about the middle of life, the centre, the despair.

It’s also up to you to decide whether you think I’m being genuine or not.  And yes, I have an exam tomorrow, hence the short post.

to write a review
takes a lot of time, moreso
when your brain is dead

what are these haikus?
they are useful fillers, yes,
between real posts

The Duel I saw,
walking there both wet and cold,
ah, ah, ah, ah-choo!

but why do I have
creative power to write
haikus – not reviews?

damn you feisty Muse,
your Japanese fetish is
very annoying

Haiku #3, Exams

with 6 comments

studying all day
my brain no longer works now
this is all you get

Well, it’s not all that you get, I’m quite willing to add a little more to this post – a little more text, a little more value, maybe even a picture if you’re lucky and behave yourself.

Why have I been studying all day?  I have an Operating Systems exam tomorrow that I’m dreading (well, not dreading, I’m pretty sure I will pass, but I no longer have any motivation to study for it).  After that, there’s a Philosophy exam this coming Tuesday, involving 60 multiple choice questions – because if anything says philosophy it’s a multiple choice question such as this:

Question 1)  What is the meaning of life?

a) To have as much sex as possible and make as many babies as possible.
b) To find love.
c) To make as much money as possible.
d) 42.
e) To get 100% in this exam.

Obviously the correct answer is E, although D comes in a close second.

And after the philosophy exam – freedom!  Freedom from university exams anyways.  There will be no frolicking through meadows.  And on that sobering note, see you tomorrow!

Here’s the picture I promised:

(It’s a very special picture – it’s invisible.)

Haiku #2: Haiku Wars

with 3 comments

Apparently there is a war on, although I’m not sure if I got the memo.  I’m involved, as is Kaefka and Thomas Cox.  If other people wish to join, then they may do so – but be warned, the battles ahead will be tough, and you may lose a limb if you’re not careful.

Haiku, are you?

Haiku, are you?

Anyways, I have one question for the opposing commanders:

I must now wonder
what the rules of this war are
and who decides them

Haiku #1

with 6 comments

Recently the opportunity arose to write a haiku about detergent.  A haiku, for those of you who are blissfully unaware, is a short poem (originating from Japan), with a structure of 5-7-5 syllables, such as this:

detergent I wash
my soul on the rinse cycle
but it is not clean

Howaito Detergent - for those who like Japanese culture but can't stand anime

Howaito Detergent - for those who like Japanese culture but can't stand anime

This haiku was brought to you by Howaito, the only detergent guaranteed to clean your soul.  If you’ve committed a cardinal sin or just pirated an album off the internet, Howaito is the detergent for you.  Want your whites to be as white as the soul of an innocent child?  Want to make your blacks as black as your heart?  Want your reds as red as a brain anneurysm?  Then Howaito is the detergent for you!  Howaito: the smart choice for the discerning Japanese consumer.

(For those of you interested, Howaito is the Japanese representation of the English word “white”.  Or at least it is one word that stands for white – if you say it fast enough you’ll hear why.)

I think it would be best to end in a fashion such as this:

this is a small post
because I am too lazy
to write a long one
